Mental health needs in the population are at the highest levels in recent history.\u00a0These needs have been driven by the conditions created by\u00a0<\/span>the COVID-19 pandemic and more recently the\u00a0<\/span>cost-of-living<\/span><\/a>\u00a0crisis.\u00a0This is an important public health issue because mental health determines\u00a0<\/span>most other outcomes in health and success in important aspects of life including at work, in relationships and in society.\u00a0Effective interventions\u00a0<\/span>do exist to support recover from mental illness and promote mental wellbeing but few people with mental health problems access them, and\u00a0<\/span>even fewer people undertake prevention focused activity. <\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the key determinants that are driving levels of mental distress in the population are outside the realm of health\u00a0services, and\u00a0require\u00a0<\/span>innovative and social interventions at community level.\u00a0A programme of activity was planned which included improving the impact of self-care\u00a0<\/span>and support by making more services available, by piloting new models of support and by motivating people to access using behavioural insight\u00a0<\/span>campaigns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An extension to\u00a0<\/span>The Life Rooms<\/span><\/a>\u00a0social model of health saw over 600 local people supported between February and August 2022\u00a0<\/span>through Liverpool\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Childrens Centres<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Libraries<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and One Stop Shops.\u00a0 People accessing these services were mainly looking for support with\u00a0<\/span>their mental wellbeing due to difficulties surrounding money, housing, employment and loneliness.\u00a0The Life Rooms work in partnership with\u00a0<\/span>the community and voluntary sector to ensure people get the practical support they need.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s ok not to be ok<\/span><\/a> was also co-created with Liverpool\u2019s population with the aim of motivating people<\/span>\u00a0to better understand mental <\/span>health and wellbeing, how to protect and improve them and how and when to access support when needed.\u00a0<\/span>The campaign uses language that\u00a0<\/span>people can identify with and simplifies the best action to take.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

All of\u00a0this activity has been fully evaluated to generate learning about how best to continue to support and improve mental health and\u00a0<\/span>wellbeing in Liverpool.\u00a0This learning is being used to help shape and improve services and new innovations on mental health and wellbeing in\u00a0<\/span>Liverpool.<\/span>\u00a0Within The Life Rooms \u201cSocial Prescribing\u201d happens between a professional and a member of the public who work together to\u00a0<\/span>establish local opportunities to improve health and wellbeing.\u00a0The person is supported along the process of accessing the types of support that\u00a0<\/span>they feel would make the biggest difference to their wellbeing and mental health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Between February and August 2022, The Life Rooms <\/span>community resilience model had generated\u00a0<\/span>1,269 social prescriptions.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

The mental health campaign launched at the start of October and\u00a0<\/span>in that first month the\u00a0campaign website\u00a0was accessed 14,070\u00a0<\/span>times, by 11,971 people. <\/span><\/p>\n

191 people had gone on from\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0website to access further information on local mental health\u00a0<\/span>support. <\/span><\/p>\n

Around 250 people spent time navigating the rich <\/span>information on the website describing things that impact mental\u00a0<\/span>health, helping people to\u00a0understand their mental health and the\u00a0<\/span>factors that influence it and accessing self-help and self-<\/span>care\u00a0information including the five ways to wellbeing.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

Liverpool has a relatively low rate of deaths from suicide compared to the national\u00a0figure, and\u00a0is in line with regional and core city averages, however the 2019-21 rate is higher\u00a0<\/span>than the national average which is the first time Liverpool has surpassed the national figure since 2016-18.\u00a0There were 50 deaths from suicide in Liverpool in 2021 which was a\u00a0<\/span>slight decrease from the previous year.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst males account for most of the deaths in Liverpool and nationally, there has been a recent increase in female deaths.\u00a0The average\u00a0<\/span>age of death from suicide in Liverpool (25-44) is also lower than the national average (45-49). Risk factors including self-harm, history of drug and alcohol misuse as well as <\/span>relationship issues and deprivation have all played a role in recent deaths from suicide in Liverpool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

National guidance in relation to suicide prevention indicates that activity be\u00a0<\/span>co-ordinated by Public\u00a0Health\u00a0but the response required, linked to the broad range of risk and protective factors, necessitates a partnership response to have impact.\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>Liverpool Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention Partnership is a broad and inclusive group of stakeholders with opportunities to help prevent suicides in Liverpool.\u00a0 This partnership is\u00a0<\/span>governed by the Liverpool Mental Health Steering Group and has devised and is delivering a local Suicide Prevention Plan with identified priorities for current activity to be\u00a0<\/span>delivered within the next 12 months.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

Under this programme,\u00a0<\/span>in December 2021, a suicide prevention campaign was co-created with people impacted by suicide.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Reach Out Liverpool\u2019<\/span><\/a>\u00a0campaign was aimed at\u00a0<\/span>people who may be\u00a0<\/span>concerned about someone else\u00a0<\/span><\/b>who is in crisis or could be contemplating suicide, encouraging them to reach out and start a supportive conversation that\u00a0<\/span>could save a life.\u00a0 The campaign was also aimed at people in crisis or contemplating suicide for whom it raises awareness of services that can provide immediate help.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n
